Christmas Essay Was Not His, Author Admits

By
Published: January 6, 2009
Neale Donald Walsch, author of the best-selling series “Conversations With God,” recently posted a personal Christmas essay on the spiritual Web site Beliefnet.com about his son’s kindergarten winter pageant.
Sara Krulwich/The New York Times
Neale Donald Walsch says he convinced himself that he had written an essay that was actually written by Candy Chand.
Janis Eckard
Candy Chand
During a dress rehearsal, he wrote, a group of children spelled out the title of a song, “Christmas Love,” with each child holding up a letter. One girl held the “m” upside down, so that it appeared as a “w,” and it looked as if the group was spelling “Christ Was Love.” It was a heartwarming Christmas story from a writer known for his spiritual teachings.
Except it never happened — to him.
Mr. Walsch’s story was nearly identical to an essay by a writer named Candy Chand, which was originally published 10 years ago in Clarity, a spiritual magazine, and has been circulating on the Web ever since. Mr. Walsch now says he made a mistake in believing the story was something that had actually come from his personal experience.
Ms. Chand said she originally wrote the piece about her son, Nicholas, and his kindergarten winter pageant and published it in Clarity in 1999. In his Dec. 28 blog posting, Mr. Walsch, who also has a son named Nicholas, said it happened at his son’s pageant 20 years ago.
Ms. Chand’s essay was reprinted, with her clearly identified as the author, in “Chicken Soup for the Christian Family Soul” in 2000, as well as on heartwarmers.com, a Web site for inspirational stories. In 2003 Ms. Chand copyrighted the story with the United States Copyright Office. Last June Gibbs Smith, a small independent publisher, released the story, “Christmas Love,” as an illustrated gift book. The story has also been passed around through e-mail and on blogs, sometimes without attribution.
Except for a different first paragraph in which Mr. Walsch wrote that he could “vividly remember” the incident, his Dec. 28 Beliefnet post followed, virtually verbatim, Ms. Chand’s previously published writing, even down to prosaic details like “The morning of the dress rehearsal, I filed in ten minutes early, found a spot on the cafeteria floor and sat down.”
On Saturday Ms. Chand contacted Elizabeth Sams, Beliefnet’s executive vice president of content and community, and on Tuesday morning Mr. Walsch’s post was taken down. “This blog chain has been taken down while Beliefnet investigates the ownership of the previously published material,” a brief statement on the Web site said.
In a statement posted Tuesday afternoon on his blog on Beliefnet, which is owned by the News Corporation, Mr. Walsch said he had made a “serious error” and apologized to Ms. Chand and his readers.
“All I can say now — because I am truly mystified and taken aback by this — is that someone must have sent it to me over the Internet ten years or so ago,” Mr. Walsch wrote. “Finding it utterly charming and its message indelible, I must have clipped and pasted it into my file of ‘stories to tell that have a message I want to share.’ I have told the story verbally so many times over the years that I had it memorized … and then, somewhere along the way, internalized it as my own experience.”
In a telephone interview, Mr. Walsch, 65, who said he regularly gave 10 to 20 speeches a year, said he had been retelling the anecdote in public as his own for years. “I am chagrined and astonished that my mind could play such a trick on me,” he said.
Mr. Walsch — whose first book in the series “Conversations With God: An Uncommon Dialogue,” published in 1996 by Putnam, a unit of Penguin Group USA, spent 139 weeks on The New York Times hardcover nonfiction best-seller list — added that he would never deliberately copy another writer’s words without attributing them. “It’s not like I’m trying to find an audience or trying to impress anybody with my writing,” he said.
Ms. Chand said in a telephone interview that she did not believe Mr. Walsch’s explanation. “If he knew this was wrong, he should have known it was wrong before he got caught,” she said. “Quite frankly, I’m not buying it.”
Ms. Chand said that she had seen others take credit for writing the story twice in church newsletters, but that this was the first time she had seen a professional appropriate her words.
“I have strong issue with anyone who would appear to plagiarize my work and pretend it is his own,” she said. “That takes away from the truth of the material, it takes away from the miracle that occurred, because people begin to question what they can believe anymore.
“As a professional writer, when someone appears to plagiarize, they damage the industry, they damage other writers’ credibility and they hurt the reader because they never know what to believe anymore.”
In a statement, Beliefnet said Mr. Walsch had withdrawn from the site’s blogging roster. “As a faith-based Web portal, Beliefnet will continue to hold ourselves and our writers to the highest standards of trust,” the statement read.
Ms. Chand said she was concerned that people would now think she had copied Mr. Walsch’s story. “How many people have heard him telling people that it’s his own?” she said. “There goes my credibility again.”
Speaking of Mr. Walsch, she asked: “Has the man who writes best-selling books about his ‘Conversations With God’ also heard God’s commandments? ‘Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not lie, and thou shalt not covet another author’s property’?”
This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:
Correction: January 9, 2009

An article on Wednesday about the admission by the author Neale Donald Walsch that a personal Christmas essay he recently posted on the Web site Beliefnet.com was actually written by another author, Candy Chand, who published it 10 years ago, misspelled the given name of a Beliefnet.com executive whom Ms. Chand contacted. The executive is Elizabeth Sams, not Elisabeth.
A version of this article appeared in print on January 7, 2009, on page C1 of the New York edition with the headline: An Essay Wasn’t His, Author Now Concedes.

Neale Donald Walsch is a modern day spiritual messenger whose words continue to touch the world in profound ways. With an early interest in religion and a deeply felt connection to spirituality, Neale spent the majority of his life thriving professionally, yet searching for spiritual meaning before beginning his now famous conversation with God. His With God series of books has been translated into 37 languages, touching millions of lives and inspiring important changes in their day-to-day lives.
In addition to authoring the renowned With God series, Neale has published 16 other works, as well as a number of video and audio programs. Available throughout the world, each of the CwG dialogue books has made the New York Times Bestseller list, Conversations with God-Book 1 occupying that list for over two and half years.
The With God Series has redefined God and shifted spiritual paradigms around the globe. In order to deal with the enormous response to his writings, Neale created the Conversations with God Foundation, a non-profit educational organization dedicated to inspiring the world to help itself move from violence to peace, from confusion to clarity, and from anger to love.
Neale’s work has taken him from the steps of Macchu Picchu in Peru to the steps of the Shinto shrines of Japan, from Red Square in Moscow to St. Peters Square in Vatican City to Tiananmen Square in China. And everywhere he has gone-from South Africa to Norway, Croatia to The Netherlands, the streets of Zurich to the streets of Seoul, Neale has found a hunger among the people to find a new way to live, at last, in peace and harmony, and he has sought to bring people a new understanding of life and of God which would allow them to experience that.

Conversations with [an occult]“God”
by Neale Donald Walsch
These popular books are an abysmal mockery of the true God, our sovereign Lord. We post this information as a warning of a rapid shift from Biblical truth and factual thinking to occult spirituality with it emphasis on feelings, imagination and mystical experience.

The quotes below reflect the mystical teachings of the occult Theosophical and “New Thought” movements.1 Each is part of a dialogue between author Neale Donald Walsch and a spiritual entity (spirit guide or demon) that calls itself “God.” The result is a seductive occult message spoken with divine authority.Apparently, millions of people believe these twisted messages came from our God. That’s not surprising, since Walsch’s books were promoted on the New York Times bestsellers list for years. Nor should we expect to be immune to the timeless pattern of deception that caused the decay of ancient Israel. The prophet Jeremiah could well be speaking to us today:
“Hear now, Hananiah, the LORD has not sent you, but you make this people trust in a lie. . . . you have taught rebellion against the LORD.” (Jeremiah 28:14-15)
Because these books touch so many lives, and because their message reflects the global and spiritual philosophy of many educators and politicians in this country, we need to discern the source, understand the deception, and heed God’s guidelines:
“As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.” (Colossians 2:6-8)
Viewing the conversations between Walsch and his god from a Christian perspective, I believe that he received the politically correct answers through a blend of two increasingly popular occult practices: channeling and automatic writing. As he explains in Book 2,
“On a blank sheet of paper, I would merely write a question. . . and no sooner was the question written than the answer would form in my head, as if Someone were whispering in my ear. I was taking dictation!”
This “Someone” is acknowledged at the beginning of the book as “That Which Is All Things, and which is the source of all things, including this book.” Then Walsch lists other spiritual teachers, “especially angels sent to me by God to bring me a particular message.” Finally he thanks the following for “their gifts to me”: Ken Keyes, Dolly Parton, Jimmy Carter, Shirley MacLaine, Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Hugh Downs, and Gene Roddenberry.
He sends a special thanks to Robert Mueller (sic), “whose work on behalf of world peace has blessed us all, and inspired this planet with new hope and a spectacular vision for over half a century.” Lest you think Muller is a minor player on the world stage, know that who served as Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations for more than three decades, worked on a global education program with UNESCO, prepared a World Core Curriculum to change the values of children around the world, and attributes his curriculum to the wisdom of Djwhval Khul, spirit guide to theosophical guru, Alice Bailey.2

[Occult] Conversations with “God” – Book 1
by Neale Donald Walsch
“God”: “My most common form of communication is through feeling. Feeling is the language of the soul.” (p.3) NDW: “How can I know this communication is from God? How do I know this is not my own imagination?”
“God”: “Do you not see that I could just as easily work through your imagination as anything else?” (6)
“God”: You are always in the process of creating. Every moment… Events, occurrences, happenings, conditions, circumstances – all are created out of consciousness. Individual consciousness is powerful enough. You can imagine what kind of creative energy is unleashed whenever two or more are gathered in My name. And mass consciousness? Why, that is so powerful it can create events and circumstances of worldwide import and planetary consequences.” (35)
EVOLUTION
“The soul is very clear that its purpose is evolution. That is its sole purpose….
” (82)
“The highest feeling is the experience of unity with All That Is. This is the great return to Truth for which the soul years. This is the feeling of perfect love.” (83)
ORIGINAL SIN
“This alleged state of imperfection in which you are said to come into this world is what your religionists have the gall to call original sin. . . Some of your religions have built up whole theologies around this misconception. . . Yet, in order to justify the idea of a punitive God, your religions needed to create something for me to be angry about.. . . Sop you’d better do something about all of this… or you’ll go straight to hell. This, in the end, may do nothing to mollify a weird, vindictive, angry God, but it does give life to weird, vindictive, angry religions.”
(119-120. See also 136)
“Only humans are judgmental, and because you are, you assume that I must be. Yet I am not…” (183)
HIGHLY EVOLVED MASTERS
“…a select few – will return with a different mission. You will return to density and matter for the soul purpose of bringing others out of density and matter.” [The same message as in Betty Eadie’s Embraced by the Light]
(184)
THOUGHTS
“Nothing occurs in your life – nothing – which is not first a thought. Thoughts are like magnets, drawing effects to you.”
(188)
“It is very difficult to reverse the effects of negative thinking once they have taken physical form.” (189)
RIGHT AND WRONG
NDW: Then the evolutionists are right!

“God”: “I find it amusing… that you humans have such a need to break everything down into right and wrong. It never occurs to you that you’ve made those labels up to help you define the material – and your Self.” (194)
GOD & MAN
“Now I’ll explain to you the ultimate mystery: your exact and true relationship to Me. YOU ARE MY BODY. As your body is to your mind and soul, so too, are you to My mind and soul. Therefore: Everything I experience I experience through you.”
(197)
“I am God, as you know understand Him. I am Goddess as you now comprehend Her. I am the Conceiver and the Creator of Everything you now know and experience, and you are My children. . . even as I am the child of another.”" (197)
“God is the energy you call imagination. God is creation. God is first thought. And God is last experience. And God is everything in between.” (198)
REINCARNATION
NDW: “Is there such a thing as reincarnation?”

“God”: “You have had 647 past lives, since you insist on being exact. This is your 648th. You were everything in them. A king, a queen, a serf…. No, there is not such thing as karmic debt – not in the sense that you mean… You are not obligated to do anything.” (204)
PSYCHIC POWER
Using psychic ability is nothing more than using your sixth sense. Obviously, this is not “trafficking with the devil,” or I would not have given this sense to you. And, of course, there is no devil with whom to traffic.”
(205)
SEX
NDW: “Is sex okay?

God: “Of course sex is ‘okay.’ … Play with sex. Play with it! It’s wonderful fun.” (205)
“Sex is sacred, too… But joy and sacredness do mix (they are in fact the same thing)… You have repressed sex, even as you have repressed life, rather than fully Self expressing with abandon and joy. You have shamed sex, even as you have shamed life, calling it evil and wicked, rather than the highest gift and the greatest pleasure.” 207
“The energy that which underscores sex is the energy which underscores life…” 207
“Call on Me, therefore, wherever and whenever you are separate from the peace that I am. I will be there. With truth. And Light. And love.” (211)

CONVERSATIONS WITH GOD, Book 2
INTRODUCTION
NDW: “…we choose to create a better life for all, to elevate our consciousness, to seek a newer world. . . . He is willing to show us the way. She will not force us, however….”
“GOD”
To some of you I am pure energy. To some, the ultimate feeling, which you call love. . . . I AM. I am the wind which rustles your hair. I am the sun which warms your body. I am the rain…”

Whatever works for you, whatever makes it happen – whatever ritual, ceremony, demonstration, meditation, thought, song, word, or action it takes for you to ‘reconnect’ – do this. Do this in remembrance of Me.” (25-26)
THERE IS NO EVIL
“Hitler went to heaven.”
(35)
“Because Hitler did nothing wrong. Hitler simply did what he did.” (55)
“…The mistakes Hitler made did no harm or damage to those whose deaths he caused. Those souls were released from their earthly bondage. . . . No one who has experienced death ever mourns the death of anyone.” (42)
“Hitler was created by you. He arose out of your Collective Consciousness…. The consciousness of separation, segregation, superiority – of ‘we’ versus ‘they,’ of ‘us” and ‘them’ – is what creates the Hitler Experience. The consciousness of Divine Brotherhood, of unity, of Oneness, of ‘ours,’ not just ‘yours/mine,’ is what creates the Christ experience.” (55)
ALL ARE CREATORS
Everyone is creating everything now being experienced. . . for I am everyone. . . . There is only one of us.”
(68)
“God is the All, and the Goddess is everything, and there is nothing else that is;” (92)
LOOK OUT FOR NUMBER ONE
You must always put yourselves first! . . . Putting yourself first does not mean being what you term “selfish” – it means being self aware.”
(98)
HOMOSEXUALITY
So many people want to say that I am against gay sexuality – or the acting out of it. Yet I make no judgment on this or any other choice you make.”
(103)
COMMUNISM
The idea behind the statement “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need” is not evil, it is beautiful. It is simply another way of saying you are your brothers keeper. It is the implementation of this beautiful idea that can become ugly.”
(162)
THE SIN OF SEPARATION 3
G: “The real question is not why do governments impose so many rules and regulations on the people, but why do governments have to? The answer has to do with your Separation Consciousness.”
NDW: “The fact that we see ourselves as separate from each other.”
“Yes.”
NDW: “But if we aren’t separate, then we are One. And doesn’t that mean we are responsible for each other?”
“Yes.”
NDW: “If I am responsible for all others, then the Communist Manifesto was right! . . . There are those who say that the concept had to be forced because the concept violates the basic nature of man.”
G: You’ve hit the nail on the head. What need to be changed is the basic nature of man.4 (See 168-169)
GLOBAL CONSCIOUSNESS
You must stop seeing God as separate from you, and you a separate from each other. The only solution is the Ultimate Truth: nothing exists in the universe that is separate from anything else. Everything is intrinsically connected, irrevocably interdependent, interactive, interwoven into the fabric of all life. All governments, all politics must be based on this truth. All laws must be rooted in it. This is the future hope of your race; the only hope for your planet.”
(173)
Indeed, a global consciousness is what is required.” (174)
“…you are damaging and depleting your mother, the Earth, the giver of all life, out of a complete disregard for her needs and natural processes.” (182)
ECONOMICS
“Eliminate money. . . Or at the very least, eliminate its invisibility. . . . If everyone knew everything about everybody’s money situation . . . there would be fairness and equity.”
(183)
“I dare you to throw out all your money, all your papers and coins and individual national currencies, and start over. Develop an international monetary system that is wide open, totally visible, immediately traceable, completely accountable. Establish a World wide Compensation System…” (186. See also 187-188)
GLOBALISM
. . . establish what some have called a one-world government, with a world court to settle disputes . . . and a world peacekeeping force. . . .
(196-197)
Your George Bush, whom history will judge to be a man of far greater wisdom, vision, compassion, and courage than contemporary society was willing or able to acknowledge, was such a leader. So was Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev.” (199)
“All would be given minimal survival portions. Those who have more would be given an opportunity to contribute 10 percent of the earnings.” (209)
“Just as there would be lower limits on income, so would there be upper limits. First, nearly everyone will tithe 10 percent of their income to the world government.” (211)
CONCLUSION
NDW: “The Divine purpose of Conversations with God, I now see, is to raise that collective consciousness. The words . . . were aimed through me at the entire world.”

Della Reese, who plays Tess in “Touched by an Angel,” also belongs in the New Thought camp. Her message fits the church she founded: “Understanding Principles of Better Living.” Its logo, a hot-air balloon, symbolizes “understanding the principles of positive thought.” She sees God, not “in the sky with a beard like Neptune’s sitting on a throne watching me”, but as one “spirit and he disperses himself in various bodies. . . .

His With God series of books has been translated into 34 languages, touching millions of lives and inspiring important changes in their day-to-day lives.

Neale Donald Walsch

Neale Donald Walsch is a modern day spiritual messenger whose words continue to touch the world in profound ways. With an early interest in religion and a deeply felt connection to spirituality, Neale spent the majority of his life thriving professionally, yet searching for spiritual meaning before beginning his now famous conversation with God. His With God series of books has been translated into 27 languages, touching millions of lives and inspiring important changes in their day-to-day lives.
Neale began his journey in the most ordinary way. Overstressed and overextended by modern day life when the options ran out and frustration reached its peak, he turned to God. Desperate questions scratched on a legal pad in the middle of a long, sleepless night, began a precious dialogue which changed Neale’s life forever and eventually changed the lives of millions. This process began over 10 years ago and became the much loved Conversations with God Series.
Today the books have been translated into 37 languages, and Book One remains to this day in the 100 top selling spiritual books on Amazon.com.
In addition to bring through the extraordinary With God series, Neale has authored 16 other works, as well as a number of video and audio programs. Available throughout the world, each of the first five CwG dialogue books has made the New York Times Bestseller list, Conversations with God-Book 1 occupying that list for over two and half years.
The With God Series has redefined God and shifted spiritual paradigms around the globe. In order to deal with the enormous response to his writings, Neale joined with loved ones and friends to create the Conversations with God Foundation, a non-profit educational organization dedicated to inspiring the world to move from violence to peace, from confusion to clarity, and from anger to love.
Neale’s work has taken him from the steps of Macchu Picchu in Peru to the steps of the Shinto shrines of Japan, from Red Square in Moscow to St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City to Tiananmen Square in China. And everywhere he has gone-from South Africa to Norway, Croatia to The Netherlands, the streets of Zurich to the streets of Seoul, Neale has found a hunger among people to create a way to live, at last, in peace and harmony. He has sought to bring men and women in every culture a new understanding of God and of Life which would allow them to experience that.
Neale was born into a Roman Catholic family living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His first spiritual teacher was his mother, who taught him not to be afraid of God, as she believed in having a personal relationship with the Divine. She taught Neale to do the same. A non-traditional believer, Neale’s mother hardly ever went to church, and when he asked her why, she told Neale, “I don’t have to go to church-God comes to me. He’s with me and around me wherever I am.” This view of God in his childhood would open Neale fully as an adult to transcend the traditional views of organized religion and bring to the world the message found in Conversations with God.
An insatiably curious child, Neale’s comments about life seemed to possess a wisdom far beyond his years, and caused relatives and family friends to often ask, “where does he come up with this stuff?” While attending a Catholic grade school, Neale would often pose questions in Catechism class that would extend past the traditional grade school curriculum. Finally, the parish priest invited Neale to his rectory to answer questions. This meeting turned into a once-a-week visit that blossomed into an open forum where Neale learned not to be afraid to ask questions about religion and spirituality-and also learned that his asking these types of questions did not mean that he would offend God.
By the age of 15, Neale’s involvement with spiritually-based teachings led him to begin reading a variety of spiritual texts, including the Bible, the Rig Veda, the Upanishads and Divine revelation according to Sri Ramakrishna. He noticed that when people got involved in religion they seemed less joyful and more angry, exhibiting behaviors of prejudice and separateness. Neale concluded that the collective experience of theology was not positive.
After graduating from high school, he enrolled at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, but academic life could not hold his interest and he dropped out of college after two years to follow an interest in radio broadcasting that eventually led to a full-time position at the age of 19 at a small radio station far from his Milwaukee home, in Annapolis, Maryland.
Restless by nature and always seeking to expand his opportunities for self-expression, Neale in the years that followed became a radio station program director, a newspaper reporter and, ultimately, managing editor, public information officer for one of the nation’s largest public school systems, and, after moving to the West Coast, creator and owner of his own public relations and marketing firm. Moving from one career field to another, he could not seem to find occupational satisfaction, his relationship life was in constant turmoil and his health was going rapidly downhill.
He had relocated in Oregon as part of a change-of-scene strategy to find his way, but Fate was to provide more than a change of scene. It produced a change in his entire life. A car driven by an elderly gentleman made a left turn directly into his path, Neale emerging from the auto accident with a broken neck. He was lucky to escape with his life.
Over a year of rehab threw him out of work. A failed marriage had already removed him from his home, and soon he couldn’t keep even the small apartment he’d rented. Within months he found himself on the street, homeless. It took him the better part of a year to pull himself together and get back under shelter. He found, at first, modest part time jobs, once again in broadcasting, then worked his way into full time employment and an eventual spot as a syndicated radio talk show host.
He had seen the bottom of life, living in the weather, gathering beer and soda cans in the park to collect the return deposit-but now he seemed to be on a roll again. Yet, once more Neale felt an emptiness in his life. In 1992, following a period of deep despair, Neale awoke in the middle of a February night and wrote an anguished letter to God. “What does it take,” he angrily scratched across a yellow legal pad, “to make life work?”
Now well chronicled and widely talked about, it was this questioning letter that received a Divine answer. Neale says that he heard a voice, soft and kind, warm and loving, that gave him an answer to this and other questions. Awestruck and inspired, he quickly scribbled these responses onto the tablet.
More questions came, and, as fast as they occurred to him, answers were given in the same soft voice, which now seemed placed inside his head. Before he knew it, Neale found himself engaged in a two-way on-paper dialogue. He continued this first “conversation” for hours, and had many more in the weeks that followed, always awakening in the middle of the night and being drawn back to his legal pad. Neale’s handwritten notes would later become the best-selling Conversations with God books. He says the process was “exactly like taking dictation,” and that the dialogue created in this way was published without alteration or editing.
In July, 2005 Neale completed the final CwG dialogue book, HOME WITH God in a Life that Never Ends, to be released in March, 2006 by Atria Books, a division of Simon and Schuster. The book covers areas never before discussed in any of the previous CwG texts, of which there are nine, including Conversations with God-Book 1, Conversations with God-Book 2, Conversations with God-Book 3, Friendship with God, Communion with God, Conversations with God for Teens, the New Revelations, Tomorrow’s God, and What God Wants.
In 2001 Neale founded Humanity’s Team, which he has described as a worldwide civil rights movement for a soul (HumanitysTeam.com). In 2005 he began work on putting into place a global education program, The School of Theology of the New Spirituality (http://schoolofthenewspirituality.com). In early 2006 he created The Group of 1000, a community of supporters who seek to place Schools of the New Spirituality in cities, towns, and villages from around the world.
