After SC rap, Ramdev vows to agitate again in Delhi

Buoyed by the Supreme Court’s censure of the government for arbitrarily and forcefully ending his Ramlila Ground protest last year, yoga guru Baba Ramdev vowed on Thursday to launch more such protests. “Till the time black money from abroad is not brought back and declared as national asset our agitation will continue. I will soon return to Delhi for another agitation,” Ramdev said.
He was speaking to reporters after the Supreme Court slammed Delhi Police for acting in an arbitrary manner and using excessive force in evicting Ramdev and his followers from the Ramlila ground in June last year.
The Supreme Court said what happened at the sprawling ground on the night of June 4-5, leading to the death of a woman, was the fault of Delhi Police as it acted in an arbitrary manner and used excessive force. It also pulled up the yoga guru for not cooperating with police.
But Ramdev said, “The government had misused its powers, undermined the constitution and law and violated human rights by forcefully evicting people who were protesting peacefully and charging them with lathis (batons).”
Blaming the home ministry for the midnight crackdown, Ramdev said that senior officials of the Delhi Police were in regular touch with the ministry and received the orders for the eviction.
“The police received orders from above… At least three to five times I asked the police to arrest me and stop hitting people with batons but they did not listen,” said Ramdev.
“I urged my followers to keep peace and not retaliate even if they were being hit by policemen.”

In the name of Justice it is an “EYE WASH” when the court got sufficient proof it should have constituted an judicial inquiry to bring to the book the culprits and the main accused. But my feeling is that there is no justice being delivered(little justice is no justice) for higher people sitting on the top positions.

SC seems to be saying there is no Government and it was police who could decide to break protest and beat sleeping people and can throw tear gas on them in enclosed atmosphere.

Our November 2004 cover
Our November 2004 cover
The Porno Boom was the title of an India Todaycover story in December 1978. That story captured the baby steps that pornography took to enter the mainstream space in India. The medium in which it made some fleeting appearances was the only one available in the country at the time: print. Thirty-three years later, porn is unmistakably mainstream. It has made its way into public consciousness over the years through multiple media, starting with print, moving to video, graduating to DVD, before going viral on the World Wide Web. At each step of the way, technology has enabled greater access for audiences. Of course, changing social mores, which have led to a more permissive society than in the 1970s, have aided the coming out of what would have been taboo not so long ago.The three Karnataka ministers, who were caught watching pornographic clips on their smartphones while seated in the state Assembly a fortnight ago, are a reflection of this all-pervasive phenomenon. Apart from being easy to access, porn is virtually free and seamlessly transferable to any device to watch at your convenience. Notwithstanding the extreme impropriety of watching it in the legislative chamber, where they are supposed to be working for the public, the ministers absurdly attempted to defend their conduct. This can only suggest that for them, watching porn is quite normal and need not be confined to the bedroom. Are they a reflection of what is, perhaps, happening to large chunks of our society? The popularity of Canadian-Indian porn star Sunny Leone on the reality show Bigg Boss hints that people are not put off by her porn history. Leone is now moving to Bollywood. The emergence of home-made porn where young people film themselves and put their videos online suggests a giant leap in social mores.
Our cover story, written by Deputy Editor Damayanti Datta, investigates whether Karnataka’s porn-watching ministers are symbolic of a wider trend. It turns out that a fair number of Indians are glued to porn. According to Google Trends, the number of searches for porn from India doubled between 2010 and 2012; in 2011, seven Indian cities were among the top ten in the world searching for porn. Greater access to high-speed Internet would explain much of that rise. The sharp growth in smartphone owners has also fuelled the porn boom. A survey by the Indian Market Research Bureau revealed that one out of five mobile users in India wants adult content on his 3G-enabled phone. It isn’t just adults who are addicted to porn. A survey of public schools in Delhi conducted by Max Hospital revealed that over 47 per cent students discuss porn every day.
There is no law against watching pornography in India, though there are strict laws against transmitting or distributing it. There is no case per se for banning the viewing of pornography. Yet, in a society which continues to, in many ways, be repressive about sex-there is very little sex education in schools and parents rarely talk about it to children openly-pornography can lead people, particularly youngsters, to have a distorted perception about sex. It is often violent, perverted and exploitative. The Indian porn industry, unlike its Western counterparts, is completely unregulated. Addiction to pornography can lead to dysfunctional relationships in the real world.
Like in many other open societies, pornography has been a perennial problem which authorities continue to battle. The arrival of the Internet has compounded the problem immensely. Without being overly prudish or repressive, there is a need for education and regulation to moderate its insidious influence.

Former Karnataka CM Yeddyurappa meets MLAs to mount pressure on high command

Former Karnataka CM Yeddyurappa meets MLAs to mount pressure on high command
Intensifying his bid for a comeback, former Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Thursday began meeting party MLAs to chalk out a plan to mount pressure on the BJP central leadership to give him a post.
The luncheon meeting called by Yeddyurappa at his Race Course residence for a show of strength ahead of party President Nitin Gadkari’s expected arrival this evening, was attended by MLAs, MLCs and some ministers.
Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, accompanied by state unit president K.S. Eswarappa called on Yeddyurappa briefly but both leaders made a quick exit.
Sources in the Gowda camp said the Chief Minister wanted to persuade Yeddyurappa to drop his plans of show of strength, but it went in vain.
However, Eswarappa told reporters that the troubles faced by BJP would end in about two or three days.
Admitting there are differences among leaders, he said Gadkari would iron them out at the ‘Chintan Mantan Baitak’, a brainstorming session called by BJP tomorrow at a private resort on the outskirts of the city.
“The party high command will take a decision on the leadership change issue,” he said.
Meanwhile, Rural Development Minister Jagadish Shettar, who was defeated by Yeddyurappa camp in the election for the BJP legislature party leader post in August last year and is now in the anti-Gowda camp, has identified himself with Yeddyurappa.
Shettar said, “Yeddyurappa has called a meeting over lunch to discuss the political situation. I don’t know the agenda, whether it includes leadership change. I am attending it.”
Excise Minister M.P. Renukacharya, a staunch Yeddyurappa loyalist, said the meeting would discuss the style of functioning of Gowda, ‘who is favourable to Congress and JDS leaders, rather than his party leaders’.
“We have documentary proof to prove this charge. We will present it to Gadkari,” he said.
Sources in the Yeddyurappa camp said that they would press for change of guard and seek Gowda’s resignation to make him honour the promise they claimed was made to their leader to quit after six months.
Yeddyurappa had hoped to return as Chief Minister in about six months, but his plans failed to fructify as the BJP high command did not show inclination to re-instate him.
Party sources said Gadkari will arrive here on Thursday night, attend chintan manthan on Friday and return to Delhi.

Another Karnataka BJP minister faces criminal cases

Thursday, February 23, 2012 11:21:31 AM by IANS ( Leave a comment)
Bharatiya Janata Party Bangalore, Feb 23 (IANS) Ahead of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari’s visit here Friday , the party faced more embarrassment Thursday as another Karnataka minister was slapped with cheating and fraud cases. The scam predates his induction as a minister.
Forest Minister C.P. Yogeshwar faces 14 cases for allegedly cheating scores of people by promising house sites on Bangalore’s outskirts.
The cases were filed by the union corporate affairs ministry after a probe by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office attached to it.
Taking cognizance of the cases, additional chief metropolitan magistrate Kiran Kini ordered Yogeshwar and four others to appear in his court in two weeks.
Yogeshwar and the four others are accused of cheating investors of Rs. 39 crores by floating a real estate firm Mega City Developers and Builders Limited (MDBL) in 2005-06.
Yogeshwar was its managing director. He was at that time in the Congress. He quit as Congress legislator in 2009 and joined the BJP.
Yogeshwar is the third minister in the D.V. Sadananda Gowda cabinet to face criminal cases. The others are Murugesh Nirani, industries, and V. Somanna, housing.
At least 15 BJP law makers, including these three ministers, are now fighting legal battles.
Leading their ranks is BJP’s first chief minister in Karnataka and south India B.S. Yeddyurappa who was forced to quit in July last year over corruption charges.
His son and BJP Lok Sabha member B.Y. Raghavendra is also an accused in the six cases of corruption and illegal land deals against Yeddyurappa.
Others include mining baron Gali Janardhana Reddy over illegal mining, S.N. Krishnaiah Setty and Katta Subramanya Naidu for corruption, Haratulu Halappa on rape charges. All were members of the Yeddyurappa ministry.
Gadkari is arriving to give pep talk to party leaders and lawmakers on morality and discipline following the involvement of three ministers, Laxman Savadi, C.C. Patil and J. Krishna Palemar in the porn viewing incident in the assembly Feb 7. They quit the ministry the next day.

File photo of Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa at a press conference in Bangalore.
BJP president Nitin Gadkari is in Bangalore for a brainstorming session as well as to diffuse tension in the party after BS Yeddyurappa served an ultimatum to reinstate him as the CM.
Yeddyurappa was forced out of office in July over corruption charges. Serving an
ultimatum, Yeddyurappa has set February 27 as a deadline to the party’s central leadership to reinstate him as chief minister, failing which he would decide on his course of action. On Thursday, a day ahead of BJP president Nitin Gadkari’s visit to the state, Yeddyurappa hosted a lunch at his residence for party leaders including MLAs, MPs and MLCs, hoping to demonstrate his hold on the party.
Around 70 of the 120 MLAs attended the luncheon.
Chief minister Sadananda Gowda, who was hand-picked by Yeddyurappa to succeed him, was seen in recent times of seeking to assert himself and coming out of Yeddyurappa’s shadow.
Meanwhile, Gowda downplayed the continued bickering within the BJP.
“I am confident that I will complete the remaining term until we face the next assembly election in 2014,” he told media persons in Mangalore where he was attending the Mangalore University Convocation.
He also maintained that there was no groupism in the party.
Yeddyurappa was forced to resign more than six months ago after a lokayukta report indicted him on illegal mining, and has in recent weeks been making vigorous behind-the-scenes efforts to regain the chief ministership.
Yeddyurappa turns 70 on February 27 and has extended invitation to all his supporting legislators to attend a lunch hosted by him on that day.

  • Nitin Gadkari has no power to make B S Yeddyurappa, the most corrupt among all other chief ministers of saffron gang. While BJP makes lot of noise over corruption in general and while Narendra Modi is equally making it known to the BJP bosses that he wants to be the next prime minister and while BJP runs and grabs each single straw to stay alive in the high stakes game against Congress party led UPA-II coalition it makes a sorry picture of a national party. No way BJP shall gain a strong foot hold in UP. The same as Congress and Mulayam Singh’s SP.
The municipal elections in Maharashtra did not bring BJP any glory either. Even their long time friend and a steady as rock ally, Shiv Sena considers BJP as a habitual losers.
Mohan Bhagwat’s grand strategy to de-link L K Advani from the ultimate power (seat) has backfired. L K is as good as BS and Namo. Loose cannons in Hindutva.
Run, Nitin run. Good for your over extended tummy (fascist fat).
    …and I am Sid Harth@sidileak.com

  • Ganesh Pai
At least now the BJP should realise the key to power is in the hands of people and not particular leaders.  It should have sacked BSY when the first scandal broke out, but it hung on to his apron unable to shed power.  In the process, it has lost face and is now also losing power.  If it had acted in the first place like it did to keshubhai patel in Gujarat, it would have come back with a majority of its own with the people’s backing.  Power is a finicky woman.  She woos those who scorn her and scorns those who woo her.  So long as the BJP was after ideology, it went from strength to strength.  When it shed ideology and started sharing bed with corrupt leaders like Mayawati, Lalitha and BSY, it is shrinking in strength.

  • Balu
I am a BJP sympathiser.  But looking to the developments in Karnataka in recent times, it is impossible for BJP to return to power in next elections in the state.  There is still hope if cleaning operation is undertaken up by the party in right earnest. But that is not happening.

  • asokan a
Yeddy wont yield this time .He is waiting for the opportune movement. During the busy election time he gives pressure and wants to extract from the party s big bosses. How far he is going to succeed is unknown? But he has started a relentless battle and all his supporting MPs give too much pressure to the high command.Karnataka unit is a severe headache to BJPs top Brass.

  • AA
Every time yeddy meets BJP top brass he agree’s for compromise, and then he meets with his chamacha’s he will change his stance. So Yeddy is going to be finished by his chelas after taht they will join JDS or Congress in next election.

It’s shishya vs guru in Karnataka as Gowda takes on BSY

The war of words between the ‘guru’ and ‘shishya‘ never seems to end. Sadananda Gowda, who became the chief minister of Karnataka [ Images ] with the blessings of BS Yeddyurappa [ Images ], appears to have fallen out with his mentor.
There has been a flurry of words between the two since the past few days. Gowda has, however, decided to take the matter to another level and has been cozying up to the Lingayat community which had once called Yeddyurappa their undisputed leader.
Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party [ Images ] president Nitin Gadkari [ Images ] will be in Bengaluru [ Images ] on Thursday for a high level meeting of the Karnataka BJP workers. But will issues pertaining to the party be discussed or would it turn out to be another round of ‘peace talks’ which Gadkari will have to once oversee again?
Ever since Yeddyurappa stepped down as chief minister, several party leaders have attempted to sideline him. However, Yeddyurappa has been adamant and has decided that he would not sit quiet until he is given an important position in the party. He ran a parallel force within the BJP while claiming that he enjoys the support of 60 MLAs.
However, his biggest bulwark was the support that he enjoyed from the Lingayat community. It is well known that the Lingayat community, with its 17 per cent vote share, is a major player in any election in Karnataka. Yeddyurappa, who began every programme with a visit to the Tumkur Siddaganga Mutt, the mother of all Lingayat mutts, had become extremely possessive about the status he enjoyed with this community.
The BJP too was well aware that they needed to deal with Yeddyurappa with kid gloves due to this support.
But today one gets to see a turn of events and there is a deliberate attempt being made by Gowda himself to erode into that support base enjoyed by his mentor.
He started the war of words by calling the former chief minister a ‘Narada Muni’. Yeddyurappa retorted by calling Gowda a ‘CM by luck’.
Moreover, there has been a coming together of Jagadish Shettar [ Images ] and Gowda in the past couple of months and this has been a worrying factor for Yeddyurappa. Shettar not only is a major leader in the state BJP, but is also a Lingayat.
Yeddyurappa had in fact opposed tooth and nail the selection of Shettar as the chief minister as he knew that the latter would first erode his Lingayat support base.
He did manage to do away that threat and installed Gowda as the chief minister, but today even in his wildest of dreams he did not expect that his boy would turn against him and, worse, try and muster up support of the Lingayat community.
The Lingayat community has, however, not been too vocal about the turn of events. There is a section of the community which still subscribes to Yeddyurappa, but the bigger worry is the deathly silence on part of the Siddaganga Mutt on this issue.
Yeddyurappa was not invited at a recent function at the mutt. The indications of trouble brewing for him were clear. Then there was another programme at Gokak town at Panchamashali convention in which Gowda and state BJP chief KS Eshwarappa were present. Some of the community leaders even took at a dig at Yeddyurappa, blaming him for doing little for the community.
Yeddyurappa may still have the support of this community but he is surely a worried man as the Siddaganga Mutt episode could be a turning point for him. There is in no way that he can take this lightly since this mutt accounts does have control over at least 15 per cent of the 17 per cent Lingayat vote share in Karnataka.
Yeddyurappa has now decided to go on the offensive, and says the attempt to keep the Lingayats away from him is a wasted effort as he still is their undisputed leader.
“Some top leaders are trying to divide the community and I have been told about this, but their attempts will not succeed. The Lingayats have stood by me in tough times and they will not let go of me, but those trying these tricks will leave the party soon,” he had said.
There clearly is a big battle on in the Karnataka BJP. The anti-Yeddyurappa faction is of the view that he has been arrogant, adamant and has been running a parallel network within the party.
Shettar and Gowda also feel that Yeddyurappa’s daily bickering and pin pricks are getting too overbearing. “He has been very defiant and it is high time he understands that it is very difficult to accommodate him when there are so many pending cases of corruption against him,” a senior leader said.
Yeddyurappa, on the other hand, has been stepping up the pressure and will meet Gadkari seeking a more active role in the party. His supporters say that they would appraise Gadkari about how Gowda and the rest are trying to sideline Yeddyurappa.
