Ron Paul closes on Newt Gingrich: In time to win Iowa?

Ron Paul is one percentage point behind Newt Gingrich, says one poll. Could Ron Paul be surging in time to win Iowa?

Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul declared Wednesday his campaign was ``peaking at the right time'' as polls show him closing in on the two perceived front-runners.
The libertarian congressman from Texas with a passionate core of followers complained that pundits were dismissing his longshot campaign prematurely and sounded optimistic about catching former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and former House speaker Newt Gingrich.
All three and others are seeking to represent the Republicans and unseat Democratic President Barack Obama next November. The first of a series of Republican nominating contests is set for Jan. 3 in Iowa.

``The momentum is building up and a lot of the candidates so far would come and go. They would shoot to the top and drop back rapidly. Ours has been very steady growth, then in this last week or two there has been a sudden extra growth,'' Paul told reporters after meeting voters in Amherst, New Hampshire.
Public Policy Polling released a survey Tuesday showing him one percentage point behind Gingrich for the lead in Iowa.
Paul took 21 percent in the survey compared to 22 percent for Gingrich with Romney third at 16 percent.
In New Hampshire, which follows Iowa's caucus with a primary election on Jan. 10, Romney led with 33 percent in a Rasmussen Reports poll released Tuesday. Gingrich was second with 22 percent and Paul third at 18 percent. Paul's four-point gap behind Gingrich narrowed from a 10-point gap in the previous week's poll and marked Paul's best showing so far, Rasmussen said.
``In political terms, it probably means we're peaking at the right time,'' Paul said.
INFLUENCE THE RACE
Paul, who is making his third bid for the White House, is unlikely to take the nomination. But he may influence the race all the way to the end, acquiring delegates that stand to give him clout at the party's nominating convention next August.
He could tilt the nomination to one candidate should the race remain undecided by convention time.
``The other candidates are scared of him and his ability to attract strong supporters,'' said Jennifer Donahue, a fellow at the Eisenhower Institute at Gettysburg College.
``If Romney had a core like Paul does, no matter how small, he'd be much better off,'' Donahue said, referring to Romney's status as the establishment candidate.
Paul, 76, attracts voters with a libertarian vision of eliminating a role for the state wherever possible. But some of his views alienate traditional bases of the Republican Party.
His call to abolish the U.S. Federal Reserve alarms Wall Street Republicans. His advocacy for withdrawing from U.S. military engagements abroad concerns national security Republicans. Social conservatives may be wary of his refusal to oppose gay marriage, as Paul says the federal government has no business regulating any marriage.
``The special interests on Wall Street -- they might have a lot of money but they don't have a lot of voters,'' Paul said.
Loyal and boisterous followers flock to his campaign events, such as a town hall meeting in Peterborough, New Hampshire, on Tuesday.
``He doesn't think he's better than any of us. You can tell by the way he speaks to us. He seems very genuine and plain. He doesn't embellish,'' said Susan Davidson, 49.
``He's an extremely brave man to be able to speak his mind so simply but eloquently in the face of all the big stars and heroes in Congress. He's not afraid of them,'' she said.
Paul has also gained attention for television ads that have attacked Gingrich.
``He definitely takes more from Gingrich than he does from Romney,'' said Ford O'Connell, a Republican strategist who said he is neutral in the nominating process. ``He's doing to Newt Gingrich what Romney hasn't been able to do. In a lot of ways he's Newt Gingrich's worst nightmare.'' (Editing by Xavier Briand)

I stopped reading at "Paul, who is making his third bid for the White House, is unlikely to take the nomination". Absolutely ridiculous that you spend the whole article saying how good he is doing then say something as biased and stupid as that. Even as a 14 year old, I can see the media's unfair policy toward the great doctor. The media better start shaping up or who knows? Us Ron Paul People may start occupying. RON PAUL 2012, TAKE THAT MEDIA MACHINE!

  • Mark Griggs
Good for you.  You seem much brighter than I was at 14.  Kudos Casey.

  • "The libertarian congressman from Texas with a passionate core of followers complained that pundits were dismissing his longshot campaign prematurely "The irony of this statement is amazing.  You completely validate his complaint by referring to his campaign as a "longshot".

When Fox News shows footage of violent riots in Greece and tries to pass it off as footage of the Russian political protests in order to incite American fear and create a mob mentality against our own protestors, you know you're through the looking glass. All mainstream media are now the puppets of our government, with the exception of a few intrepid reporters. Go to rt.com and other international outlets to discover the real story, as we've, ironically, become the Soviet Union before its fall; while we all slept, got fat and watched Dancing with the Stars, the government was taking away our liberties and our media outlets were merged into corporate entities and served establishment talking points to stick to.
It's time to take our country back.

  • Octavion
RT?  Russian TV!? You've GOT to be kidding. There is no media outlet that is less of a propaganda machine than RT! Did you know that the entire midwest was a radioactive wasteland? RT reported that back in June. If you're into conspiratorial, anti-Capitalist BS, watch RT.

  • Mark Griggs
Sorry Octavion I clicked "like" when I meant to click "reply".  I would watch Russian TV far before ever watching Bill O'Reilly and the outright propaganda on Fox news.  Dr Ron Paul 2012!

  • Independent Thought
You should always use discernment when looking at news, but it doesn't hurt to get a global view of things. International outlets report things that are not reported in the United States, and I trust a Russian outlet to report more accurately on what is going on in Russia than I do Fox News, especially when it has been outed that Fox is actively spinning the Russian protests. As always, I suggest as many different viewpoints as possible so that one can come to their own conclusions. But taking what CNN, MSNBC, Fox, etc says at face value is extremely dangerous and simply makes you a sheep ready for the eventual slaughter.

  • throw in democracynow, and theyoungturks for a nice balance. i always love seeing the different takes for the same incident from the different media outlets, in my opinion theyoungturks ar ethe only ones who call bu11$hit on everyone all the time

  • Paul keeps getting stronger while reporters such as this one keep dismissing his "unlikely", "longshot" campaign. Weren't y'all saying he would never get more than 10-12% just a month ago?

  • "Paul, who is making his third bid for the White House, is unlikely to take the nomination."One day your readers will turn on you for repeating this line. I too will turn on CSM if lines like this are not ommited. It's extreamly frustrating...

  • biasedone
The "unlikely to win" non-sequitur is so common I'm guessing it may be a teaser to attract comments. Maybe online news companies charge advertisers a premium per the number of comments they attract?

  • Richard_Haydn
@biasedon most online ads charge by the number of "impressions" they get.  That is, the number of unique vistors that pull up a page with their ad on it.  See that ad on the right margin?  You just became an "impression".

  • navyseniorchief
Spend a bit more time reading WHO wrote the article instead of trying to find fault with the messenger. Daniel Trotta writes for Reuters. This was a feed thru from them.

  • davids12
What is he supposed to do, lie? Every poll shows Paul getting creamed in the overall nomination. You know there are 49 primaries after Iowa, right?

  • Richard_Haydn
@davids12, you have a valid point.  However, I would argue that someone who still gets practically no mention in the media, or negative mention in the media, and is now statistically tied for 1st in the first caucus....well you get it.  What if they gave him the "Herman Cain is Soaring.." send-off ?  At this stage especially, most people just mention the name they hear the most on the TV.  That should be obvious.  So explain his position in the polls.

  • davids12
He is "statistically tied for first" in a single poll. His position in the polls, plural, is that he is not even close to first.

  • x181
I'd vote for Ron Paul over Obama but I'd also vote for Obama over Gingrich.

  • yup here too. i vote for Paul, and against Neo cons (for obama, i guess)

  • Chad Nordstrom
I'll vote for Ron Paul, and NO ONE ELSE.

  • ObservantPatriot
I'll vote him in 3rd party or write him in, scr€w O-bomb-a my friends are still in Afghanistan where heroin and opium fields are being harvested and he doesn't plan on vetoing the NDAA. It was on CSPAN when presenting the bill, it was stated that the O-bomb-a administration specifically requested the clause that excluded US citizens from being indefinitely detained by military police. He's just as bad as freakin Bush, and McCain, they're all in on it. Don't be fooled, be conscious and vote with your conscience. Vote Ron Paul r3VOLution!

  • First thing he should do as President, would be to send a nice bag of Crap to every news outlet that dogged him.

  • SnarkyRichard
Just to show how the media totally dismisses him , he isn't talked about at all until it's revealed that he's a single percentage point behind the leader in the polls . Typical . Go Ron Paul go !

  • ``The other candidates are scared of him and his ability to attract strong supporters,'' said Jennifer Donahue, a fellow at the Eisenhower Institute at Gettysburg College.""They are not scared, they are totally petrified. The wheels are coming off and I am one of the many holding a crowbar!

  • logan102
We sure better not have peaked! We still have a long way to go. Iowa is the first step then New Hampshire. Ron will keep doing what he needs to and I will keep commenting on as many articles as possible to get people to see the truth.

  • Mark Griggs
Me too!  I've started to feel like a political nut bc I'm commenting at every negative slight on Dr Paul that I catch.  Thank God for the internet, otherwise I would really feel alone in my conviction for Dr Paul thanks to "mainstream media" whatever the hell that means..  I'll be voting for the first time and I'm 28.  Dr Paul 2012

  • Ron Paul says it himself: he's not just running to become President, he's running to change the course of history and restore America.I know it is incredibly sappy, and people, if you haven't listened to Dr. Paul very much you won't understand at all, but I LOVE that guy. He is the real deal. He is Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. He is honest, straightforward, patient, erudite, and genuine.

  • Newt is an emotionally unstable--Mitt if a flip flopper--Bachmann does not have Ron Paul's wisdom nor his "I mean what I say and I say what I do" consistency. And just as all his previous warnings have come to light so too has his warning on our liberty being lost. There is a recent Bill introduced in the House, HR 3035 (last or a few weeks ago), which would allow private businesses to contact you on your cell phone for whatever reason they so deemed required to do their business with you while you pay for the minutes. Now, some individuals already allow this, so why would they need a national law to force everyone to be subjected to this?!!! I don't know anyone who would say "yes" to cell phone advertisements while having to pay for them. I urge you to goes to the U.S. House of Representative and look up House Bill, HR 3035, Mobile Informational Call Act, which all businesses to automatically start dailing cell phone numbers for advertisement. Read and weep and get angry, then act. Go to the thomas dot loc dot gov site and search in the Bills with HR 3035 for the current session (112th). Then when you are finished reading, get angry and start firing off them emails to those idiots who wants to sell you out. Obama has been bought, Newt was bought, Mitt will be bought, Bachmann is buying--only Ron Paul has not and could not be bought. Obama proved to be ineffective, a liar, and totally inexperienced in dealing with a crooked Congress, let's give truth the seat now. The criteria for truth is consistency, Ron Paul has been consistent for his entire service in Congress. Iowa, please fire the first shot and let's win this for the American People!!!

  • What do you mean, "influence the race"?  Ron Paul is running to win, and doing a good job of it.  I know a lot of people who agree with Ron Paul on the biggest issues, but didn't support him before because the media told them he couldn't win.  When Ron Paul wins Iowa, the gig is up and the floodgates of support will open.

  • Ted Lutter
I tired of reporters repeating the bias of their colleagues!  It'd be nice if you just reported the facts.

  • rienone
Hey GOP! Suck it up and nominate Paul and utilize his strong crossover appeal and fervent base... OR LOSE!

Oh yeah!!! People are really sweating now. More and more articles are flushing the internet pleading people not to vote for Ron Paul. Ron Paul has been heard by the american people and main stream can't take it anymore. There bitting their nails nervously as they see change coming. Let do this. Lets save America.I have registered for the primaries. "I've got my pens ready with a full ink cartridge." Im bringing 5 pens with me so nothing crazy happens. • This is getting too old "... is unlikely to take the nomination" Do journalists get together a night before to write the same article-comments over and over again. I am not voting for a party but for a person that has the integrity, posses character, and shows leadership. I don't know who else fits the bill then RP. Do I agree with him on everything no but again do you agree with your spouse on everything as well? He is everything that we stand for at the core - freedom and liberty.  Obama is a good president but not good enough for these drastic times and we need someone with a traceable record that stays behind his words and listens to the people. isn't what is this country all about = we the people

  • Jay Tamez
The majority of my friends, family, coworkers & business clients say they want Ron Paul for the Republican nomination. Why does the Christian Monitor say that Ron Paul will probably not take the nomination? Jay Tamez from Wisconsin

  • davids12
Because actual polls which sample a slightly wider audience than your friends and family show him to have a small chance of winning the nomination.

  • In reading the article, I find that Ron Paul is 76. However, I still don't know how old Gingrich and Romney are (the other two contenders you mentioned). Perhaps you were subconsciously hinting that he's too old to be president? At least you didn't say, "Ron Paul, 76 (too old to be President)", that would have been too obvious. You also refrained from saying "Gingrich (only a few pounds lighter than Chris Christie)", so I guess that's fair.As far as his age is concerned, he is in better physical shape than any of the others he is running against. So, no reason for you to even mention it.

  • Richard_Haydn
Notice they don't say "Romney, in his second bid for the GOP nomination...." but always "Paul, in his third bid...."  Why is that?  Because propaganda is much better when it is subtle.  How about "Ron Paul lerks.."  and  "Cain raises huge amounts..." but "Ron Paul's money grab..."Don't you realize that we are a pretty well educated group of people?  Don't you realize that the original core of Paul supporters are almost all life long Republicans?  Of course you do.  Hey CSM, jump aboard and ride the wave so you don't look so silly in the aftermath.  We only need to hit 12% support in the general public and then its all over, but your crying.

  • 2012RonPaul
So the Wall Street Republicans and the war- mongering neocons don't like Ron Paul?
All the more reason for the rest of us to support him!Ron Paul= for the people, not the banksters and the tanksters!

"But some of his views alienate traditional bases of the Republican Party. His call to abolish the U.S. Federal Reserve alarms Wall Street Republicans. His advocacy for withdrawing from U.S. military engagements abroad concerns national security Republicans. Social conservatives may be wary of his refusal to oppose gay marriage, as Paul says the federal government has no business regulating any marriage."
It is absurd to think that the traditional views of the Republican Party include a central bank, widespread global policing, and regulating personal affairs.  The traditional conservatives of the days of intellectual discourse would have been adamantly opposed to such centralized control.  The fed has done nothing but tarnish our currency and promote the housing bubble.  The Iraq war and other U.S. military involvements have all been unnecessary for our safety and have been casting a negative image of ourselves among the Islamic world (which used to share great peaceful relations with the western world before the days of regime building by the U.S.), thus endangering our safety as an unintended consequence.  The right to marriage ought not to be restricted by the central government, but decided on state by state as delegated in the Constitution's 10th amendment, closer to the tune of the will of the constituents.
When did the GOP go wrong with all of these issues?  With the policies that most Republicans endorse today, they have actually become big government centrists and just as liberal as the Democratic party they claim they radically oppose.  The traditional conservative ideology does not any longer line up with the modern neoconservative Republican Party's beliefs as suggested by their policies.  Ron Paul is one of the last in the GOP to remain true to core conservative, constitutional principles and policy.
The "traditional bases" of the Republican Party are not those things the editor mentioned here, but quite the opposite.  The Republican Party today, rather, has strayed from the tradition that Ron Paul adheres to.

"But some of his views alienate traditional bases of the Republican Party."No you are wrong. His views are in line with traditional bases of the Republican Party.
However his views are not in line with  the Neo-Conservative wackos who have taken over the Republican Party.  It is their views who are not in line with the traditional bases of the Republican Party.
Ron Paul is the ONLY real Republican left in the Party.

If Ron Paul wins Iowa and New Hampshire, state media will continue to marginalize him and dismiss his incredibly important and hard fought wins as a fluke and meaningless. Meanwhile any wins from Romney, significant or not, will be proof that he's sewn up the election and solidified himself as the inevitable winner. State media will also shift focus away from the early states as if they don't matter at all anymore, in the same way that they discredited the Ames straw poll after Ron Paul tied for first.

  • Doc3
What Dr. Ron Paul has been warning the Nation of is now playing out in front of us.  Dr. Paul has voted for his convictions and has held true to his beliefs, something very few politicians can say.The future of the Republic is at stake.  If we do not get the debt, spending and borrowing under control there will be nothing left to pass on to our children or future generations.
2012 vote out all incumbents in Congress, send Ron Paul to the White House with the proper backing in Congress.  We have a job to do.

I agrea with the establishment.  The federal reserve has done a splendid job of keeping the economy stable.  I also like the fact that my kids will get to pay off the interest they are charging the tax payer, and not me.  Anyone that does not support Wall Street is un-American.  They are the financial engine of the country.  If we have to bail them out every now and then it's certainly not their fault.  These Paul people are un-Patriot to the core.  I think all that rubbish about the troops wanting to come home is just propaganda along with them supposedly giving more money to Paul then all the other GOPers combined.  That's just made up bull.  Hell, these Paul people are nothing but a bunch of kids living in their parents basements. Those damn Iranians will be invading us as soon as we pull out of there.  They could easily lease a bunch of ships from Princess Cruise lines and attack us.  Wake up America!

This applies to Ron Paul and his election.

Ron Paul may win Iowa because of fiercely loyal supporters and an on-the-ground organization that will mobilize his voters. However, to make the leap, that by winning Iowa he will also win New Hampshire, Florida and South Carolina and all the other upcoming nomination contests, is a stretch. I hope Paul wins Iowa and weakens Gingrich's momentum. Gingrich has the most to lose as the "frontrunner."

  • packeryman
I totally agree that a Iowa win for Ron Paul is what the nation needs but the hierarchy of the Republican party will never let him get the nomination. Gingrich is a loser for the Republican all the way around. We Independents will never vote for him, either stay home or vote for Obama. As has been said before if Newt was a car salesman he would be called low life scum.If Ron Paul and his people want him to go any where he has to leave the Republican party. The Libertarian party is on the  ballots in every state, a necessity to win, it takes for ever for a new party to get on all ballots. He would carry most Independents, some Dem's who don't like Obama, Republicans who don't like Newt, Libertarian members, and of course all Ron Paul supporters once they realize the third party way is the only way. Maybe the time has come. A win by Ron Paul in Iowa would do wonders for Romney( a much better all around candidate and good human being as opposed to Newt. Lets go third party and make this the presidential race of all times!

  • Brian Blackman
Ron Paul is the only candidate that will get the Youth Vote, Independent Vote, Conservative Democrat Vote, Military Vote, Anti-War Vote, and Disgruntled with Obama Vote.   All other candidates epitomize the status quo, crony Washington oligarchy insider.    Dr. Paul is
the only candidate with principles.   Americans needs to find these same principles.   America needs to elect Ron Paul, suck it up during the correction to liquidate malinvestment, and work to give our children and grandchildren the truly free and prosperous country our founders envisioned and they deserve.   It starts with Iowa.  Vote Ron Paul.

  • davids12
Siiiigh... Try to keep in mind that there are 49 primaries after Iowa, guys. This is one poll in one state done by a Democratic polling firm showing him in second place.

  • Warning: if Ron Paul does NOT get the nomination, Obama will win the election.  It's as simple as that.  Every time the MSM says Paul won't get the nomination, he gets more fans!  MSM and Republican Party:  You're burying yourselves!

  • callmebc
Libertarians are the non-nutcase branch of modern conservatism, and tend to be marginalized by current "mainstream" right wing Republicans (Anyone else notice how cruel and condescending Fox News has been to Ron Paul?)  Paul has major drawbacks in terms of how his ideology would realistically fit in with a Presidency, but overall he would make for a much, much more trustworthy candidate than any other Republican running, with the possible exception of the even more marginalized Jon Huntsman. But even if he wins the Republican nomination only to  lose to Obama (who is actually doing a pretty good job despite very confused notions fueled by our increasingly random and research & context-loathing news media), that would still give the GOP a warning message about being so far out in right field that they are not even in the game.

  • josephle2k
CSM delivers thoughtful and global, both in practice and in spirit. In an era when the mainstream media has narrowed its lens, we're convinced readers yearn for the opposite. This global perspective comes naturally; the Monitor's founder, Mary Baker Eddy, explained our mission this way: "To injure no man, but to bless all mankind."
While we may not land on the doorstep or in the inbox of all mankind (though we’d like to), our aim is to embrace the human family, shedding light and understanding with the conviction that truth is the beginning of solutions. This conviction has served our readers and story subjects well over the years, winning us seven Pulitzer Prizes and more than a dozen Overseas Press Club awards.
The purpose of our journalism is to "bless" not "injure." That is central to how we cover the
    news:
    We're unrelenting but fair.
We're excited by what’s new and developing - yet always mindful of the history behind us.
We're broad in scope but written for the individual. And we make a point of resisting the sensational in favor of the meaningful.
We're also free to be an independent voice, devoid of the corporate allegiances and pressures that critics say too often skew today's media.
Very principled statements, aren’t they Dan? So, what is your faith?
