The appointment of Vikas Mathkari as president of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Pune unit was one of the triggers that set off a crisis in the party at the national level, leading to senior leader Gopinath Munde’s revolt. However, why should a city-level appointment in Pune become a prestige issue for Munde, who has played a key role in strengthening the BJP in Maharashtra? In November 2010, former Pune president of the BJP, Girish Bapat, resigned from the post to protest against the withdrawal of the party candidate from the election to a seat in the legislative council. Since then, there was intense competition in the party for the post of city president. Ultimately, former national president Venkaiah Naidu visited Pune in January 2011 and assessed the opinion of local party leaders over their choice for city president. The Munde faction had supported former city general secretary Yogesh Gogawale, while the opposing camp was pushing for the appointment of Vikas Mathkari, viewed as belonging to national president Nitin Gadkari’s faction. The party leadership did not act on Naidu’s report for a long time and suddenly on May 27, on Gadkari’s birthday, the state unit announced Mathkari’s appointment as the city president. Since then, the factional fight in the BJP has come out in the open. Mathkari’s appointment was challenged by Gogawale the very next day by demanding that Naidu’s report be tabled. At another press conference, he also paraded his 24 out of 41 supporters who had voted to elect the city president. However, the BJP got a shock on May 28 when Munde, despite being in the city, skipped an important joint rally of the BJP with its ally Shiv Sena and new partner, the Athawale faction of the Republican Party of India (RPI). Munde sulked by abstaining from that public meeting and also kept away from regional meetings. He also skipped the huge joint rally organised by the Shiv Sena-BJP with the RPI on June 9 to announce their new alliance and, on June 17, made his displeasure with the party public by speaking to the media. The BJP and its previous avatar, the Jan Sangh, was recognised as a party of Brahmins till the identity was changed through deliberate social engineering with a major role by Munde, a mass leader from the OBC’s (other backward castes) Vanjari community. Munde helped many non-Brahmins join and grow as leaders in the party. He thus helped the party expand its social support base and the BJP grew from strength to strength due to this. Finally, in 1995, the BJP came to power in Maharashtra with its alliance partner, the Shiv Sena, with much credit to Munde. With his growing influence in the party, the “Munde faction” became stronger which was not viewed favourably. Thus, while the appointment of a city president in Pune mattered to Munde, the party seemed determined to effectively sideline him by removing his supporters from important positions. It was in April 2008 that Munde had previously resigned from all party posts to protest against the appointment of Nitin Gadkari’s ardent supporter, Madhu Chavan, as the BJP’s Mumbai unit president. Munde was later persuaded to withdraw his resignation. The Lok Sabha and assembly elections were due in 2009 and the party could not afford to suffer political embarrassment with an important non-Brahmin leader leaving it. Unlike in 2008, there are no major elections round the corner in Maharashtra and Munde’s competitor, Nitin Gadkari, is at the helm of affairs in the BJP. The party has found non-Brahmin alternatives to counter Munde, who also does not have many options in the complex scenario of state politics. Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Pawar has already stated that he does not have anything to offer to Munde. The ultimate fallout of Munde’s rebellion is awaited. In 2008, the BJP had placated him by removing Madhu Chavan soon after his appointment as Mumbai BJP chief. Will the BJP do the same with Vikas Mathkari? Or will the party leadership force Munde to accept Mathkari’s appointment, unmindful of the consequences? The latter is my own creation. 'swayam' is a form of the root, 'swa,' and means first person singular. With that little introduction in basic Sanskrit language, let us re-translate the offending word, 'swayamsevak.' My version is more right than their. Self serving, selfish, self promoting, self delusional, self propping, self professing, self grand standing, chest thumping, Hindutva hooch imbibing big bad Hindu hyena. Other words like 'swastha,''swah:' 'swabhiman,' rally of Baba Ramdevil, oops, honorable HinDoo-Doo BhogiYogi Babasaheb, oops BabaRao DevRao Jee ga jee ga jeejeejeee.' A little variation on Marathi 'powada,' refrain. Now let us get down and dirty, oops, at the bottom of this riddle, namely, Is RSS, really, really and one more time, really a social organization?
